As most websites are now quite complex, displaying images, video and audio as well as text, a dial-up connection will make the internet experience painfully slow. In addition, dial-up costs the price of a local phone call with every connection and it ties up the phone line.
Broadband internet
With a broadband internet connection, the internet can be accessed at much higher speeds and you can make or receive phone calls on your landline while online.
While dial-up speeds average between 54-64 kilo bits per second (kbps), broadband starts at 256kbps and ranges all the way up to 30,000kbps for a cable broadband.
A broadband internet connection will allow you to watch television, download movies and listen to music on demand.
Calling friends and family over the internet through VoIP is much cheaper and even free if they are also online.
Browsing the internet, shopping online and using sites like Facebook and eBay is a much better experience over a fast broadband connection.
You may find that you are using the internet much more after switching to a broadband connection from dial-up.
Is broadband internet expensive?
If you have a working phone line, you will only need to choose an internet provider, a plan and buy a modem.
You can buy your modem from your internet provider when you sign up to the plan, or you can purchase one from an electrical store. However, if you choose to buy one from your provider, you will receive technical support and the modem will come pre-programmed with your username - all you will have to do when you receive it is plug it in.
There will be an initial set-up fee and a monthly cost. The set-up fee covers the cost of a technician visiting your telephone exchange and connecting your landline. However, some providers will waive this fee on longer contracts.
You will also need to install line filters if you have any other appliances on the landline, such as a telephone, fax machine or back-to-base alarm system, as the broadband signal can interfere with their operation. These can be bought from your internet provider or an electrical store.
The monthly cost of a broadband connection can be from as little as $9.90 a month from Dodo as part of a home phone and internet bundle. However, you need to choose a plan that reflects the amount of data you will be using and the speed you want, and be wary of extra charges that may be involved if you go over your data limit.
